The Arc of Delaware 2023 Annual Meeting was held on Wednesday, May 31 at the Delaware State Troopers Association in Dover.

The evening officially started with a welcome from Gary Heckert, president of The Arc of Delaware, who then introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Bethany Hall-Long, lieutenant governor of Delaware.

Lt. Governor Hall-Long recognized The Arc for 70 years of grassroots advocacy. From her extensive experience in physical and mental health, research and public service, she addressed the need to break down barriers to health care, employment, housing and supportive services so that people with disabilities can thrive. She closed by reinforcing that she was “in it for the long haul” with us.

A social break followed, where Board of Director candidates, staff, members and guests could mingle and enjoy a hot buffet.

During the business portion of the meeting, minutes from the 2022 annual meeting were approved and a financial report was delivered. Susannah Eaton-Ryan, executive director, then spoke on the current status of The Arc and her priorities for 2023, including a better understanding of community and independence from the perspective of people with IDD, ensuring adequate replacements for dismantled services, and building stronger partnerships within the disability community.

Gary then presented Barbara Robleto with a Volunteer award, recognizing her 40+ years of advocacy on behalf of people with IDD. Barb joined The Arc of Delaware shortly after her daughter was born and has been active on various committees and the Board of Directors ever since. She currently leads both the marketing and public policy committees.

A slate of candidates to fill open positions on the Board of Directors was introduced by Ruth Banta, nominating committee chair. After voting to elect the nominees, members voted to approve the full Board of Directors for 2023.
